Optimized Multipactor-Resistant Wedge-Shaped Waveguide Bandpass Filters
2013
[EN] Wedge-shaped waveguides present a certain advantage with respect to rectangular waveguides regarding their resistance to multipactor discharges. In this paper, the optimal configuration for the wedge geometry is investigated based on theoretical results, on a precise multipactor prediction tool, and on previous experience. In addition, design rules are presented, which allow us to achieve for wedge-shaped filters electrical performances comparable to the ones of rectangular waveguide filters, while at the same time improving the multipactor-free power range. As a proof of concept, two three-pole bandpass filters with equivalent electrical characteristic of 150-MHz bandwidth, centered a…
Multichannel single-output color pattern recognition by use of a joint-transform correlator.
1996
A novel method for performing color image recognition by the use of the coherent joint-transform correlator is introduced. The input plane of the proposed method is a spatial rearrangement of the separation into color channels of both the color input scene and the color target. This input plane is gray scaled and monochromatic, thus it can be displayed by the use of amplitude spatial light modulators to achieve real-time operation. The system provides a single output-plane result of the optical coherent addition of the separate channels’ correlation outputs. At the output plane no electronic postprocessing is needed, and the detection decision is achieved simply by the application of thresh…
Rigorous Multimode Equivalent Network Representation of Multilayer Planar Circuits
2018
The objective of this paper is to extend the use of the Multimode Equivalent Network formulation, originally developed to analyze waveguide junctions, to the analysis of planar circuits that include arbitrary rectangular printed, zero thickness metallizations together with internal and external ports in the transverse plane. The theoretical derivations lead to an accurate and computationally efficient tool for the analysis of boxed, multilayer microwave printed circuits. In addition to theory, the tool developed is used here to analyze two practical examples: a dual-bandpass and a 4-pole bandpass boxed microstrip filters. Good agreement with respect to commercial software tools and measurem…
Accurate tuning of mismatched twin-core fiber filters
1998
We have demonstrated a reproducible and accurate way of tuning the coupling wavelength of a mismatched twin-core filter. This method allows high quality all-fiber filters to be implemented with low loss at any desired wavelength over a range of few hundred nanometers from the same fiber. An ~500-nm tuning range is demonstrated, limited only by the measurement setup and not by the technique itself. Highly accurate control of the filtering wavelength in combination with control of filtering strength by adjustment of the length of the twin-core fibers allows complex filter profiles to be implemented by cascading of several different filters. These filters are also very stable to a change in te…
A DSP-Based Resolver-To-Digital Converter for High-Performance Electrical Drive Applications
2016
This paper presents a low cost, simple, and highly accurate resolver-to-digital converter (RDC) for electrical drive applications based on an integrated software approach, thus allowing a significant reduction of hardware components count with significant improvements in terms of reliability, reduction of fault rate, and susceptibility to electromagnetic interference (EMI). Particular attention has been addressed to cost which is 25% off over conventional RDC. Simulations and experimental tests confirm the high quality of the proposed system.
Configurable bandwidth imaging spectrometer based on acousto-optic tunable filter
2005
This paper presents a new portable instrument called Autonomous Tunable Filtering System (ATFS), developed for highly customisable imaging spectrometry in the VIS-NIR range. The ATFS instrument consists of an Acousto-Optic Tunable Filter (AOTF), an optical system, a Radio Frequency (RF) driver based on a Direct Digital Synthesiser (DDS) and control software. The ATFS can be attached to a variety of high-performance monochrome cameras. The system works as a spectral bandpass filter whose wavelength can be selected between 400nm and 1000nm and whose bandwidth can be adjusted between 4nm and 50nm. The filter can be tuned electronically at a very high speed and accuracy, thanks to the DDS versa…
Efficient software tool for the analysis of planar-based metamaterial structures
2007
We present a software tool specialized in the analysis of metamaterial structures based on planar circuits. The tool implements a formulation for open transversal multilayered structures, which reduces the number of unknowns employed in the problem. Besides, the formulation has been efficiently accelerated by means of a Kummer-like decomposition, extracting the singular behaviour of the Green's functions from the frequency analysis. By means of this formulation, several different kinds of metamaterial structures built in coplanar and microstrip technologies are successfully analyzed, obtaining bandpass and stopband filter responses in a fast and accurate way. New distributed model for synthesis of classical dual mode filters
2010
Up to now, distributed models for classical dual mode filters have not been developed. In this paper, the whole procedure to derive such distributed models is shown step by step. The resulting formulas are very similar to those standard ones used for in-line filters since the 1960s. Model limitations, very similar to those related to classical formulas, in terms of precision and bandwidth, are pointed out. Finally, two practical examples of distributed models of dual mode filters for satellite transponders with different orders have been extracted.
Efficient Analysis and Design Strategies for Evanescent Mode Ridge Waveguide Filters
2006
In this paper, a research on the compromises arisen in the design of traditional evanescent mode waveguide filters is carried out. As a result, clear design methodologies for optimizing length, losses, power handling and spurious-free out-of-band response are developed. In addition, an efficient and very accurate modal analysis tool for this kind of structures is presented. Several filters have been designed according to the different strategies proposed, and a prototype has been finally manufactured. Measurements and filter dimensions validate the proposed design procedures.
Testing the X-IFU calibration requirements: an example for quantum efficiency and energy resolution
2018
With its array of 3840 Transition Edge Sensors (TESs) operated at 90 mK, the X-Ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) on board the ESA L2 mission Athena will provide spatially resolved high-resolution spectroscopy (2.5 eV FWHM up to 7 keV) over the 0.2 to 12 keV bandpass. The in-flight performance of the X-IFU will be strongly affected by the calibration of the instrument. Uncertainties in the knowledge of the overall system, from the filter transmission to the energy scale, may introduce systematic errors in the data, which could potentially compromise science objectives - notably those involving line characterisation e.g. turbulence velocity measurements - if not properly accounted for.
